Ornamental Pruning
Ornamental Pruning is one of our greatest sources of pride. Proper
pruning encourages growth from within the outline of the plant. It allows the plant
to have a looser, more natural appearance not the "lollipop" or "box" shape so
prevalent in today's landscapes. All plants, deciduous or evergreen, flowering or
not benefit from hand pruning versus shearing. Shearing does have its place however.
Some types of hedge, topiary and formal gardens all require the "clipped" look that
shearing provides. One of the greatest benefits of hand pruning is the ability to
manage the size of mature landscapes. You can sometimes extend the life of plantings
by reducing overgrown material. Removing branches or limbs of varying lengths can
promote new growth from points in the interior of the plant, thereby regenerating
the plant.
